Devotional Reflection — “Hold Fast to What God Said”
In 1 Kings 13, a man of God was sent to deliver a message of judgment to an altar built in rebellion against the Lord. His mission was clear. His instructions were clear: “Do not eat bread or drink water there, and do not return by the way you came.”
But on his way home, another prophet found him. This older prophet spoke in the language of faith, using the name of the Lord, claiming an angel had given him a new word. It sounded spiritual. It sounded harmless. It even sounded more comfortable.
The man of God believed him. He sat down to eat and drink — and in that moment, he broke the very word God had given him.
A lion met him on the road. It did not tear him apart in rage, but stood beside his body as a silent witness: God’s words are not suggestions.
The Lesson
The story feels severe, but it speaks a timeless truth:
-
God’s Word does not change because someone with religious authority says otherwise.
-
Communion in the wrong place is not harmless; it’s a sign of unity with something God has called you to leave behind.
-
Obedience must be complete — it’s not enough to start well; you must finish well.
For Us Today
Voices will come, some wrapped in kindness, others dressed in spirituality, offering “new revelations” that contradict what God has already made clear. They will sound reasonable. They may even sound godly.
But the safest place is still the place of obedience. The safest voice to follow is the one that has already proven true.
Hold fast to what God has spoken to you. Don’t trade it for an easier path, a more comfortable invitation, or a “word” that undermines the one you know came from His mouth.
Prayer
Lord, give me discernment to recognize Your voice, and courage to follow it to the very end. Keep my heart anchored in Your Word, even when other voices try to sway me. Help me to finish the race with the same obedience and passion with which I began.
